Fiji finds 4 not guilty of sedition in media freedom case

May 22, 2018

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A judge in Fiji found an opinion writer and three newspaper executives not guilty of sedition on Tuesday in a ruling that many consider a victory for press freedom in the South Pacific nation. Judge Thushara Rajasinghe ruled that prosecutors failed to prove an opinion piece had promoted feelings of ill will and hostility between Muslims and non-Muslims in Fiji. The piece ran in a small indigenous-language newspaper published by The Fiji Times. The men were each facing up to seven years in prison if found guilty. The judge also found Fiji Times Limited not guilty....

Social media under microscope in emotive Irish abortion vote

May 22, 2018

DUBLIN — In homes and pubs, on leaflets and lampposts, debate is raging in Ireland over whether to lift the country's decades-old ban on abortion. Pro-repeal banners declare: "Her choice: vote yes." Anti-abortion placards warn against a "license to kill." Online, the argument is just as charged — and more shadowy, as unregulated ads of uncertain origin battle to sway voters before Friday's referendum, which could give Irish women the right to end their pregnancies for the first time. The highly charged campaign took a twist this month when Facebook and Google moved to restrict or remove ads relating to...

From airlines to pizza parlors, EU businesses adopt data law

May 22, 2018

LONDON — Lisa Meyer's hair salon is a cozy place where her mother serves homemade macaroons, children climb on chairs and customers chat above the whirr of hairdryers. Most of the time Meyer is focused on hairstyles, color trends and keeping up with appointments. But now she's worried about how the European Union's new data protection law will affect her business as she contacts customers to seek permission to store their details. Even though she supports the law, Meyer fears it may cut her mailing list by 90 percent as people choose to withhold their data or simply overlook her...

Markle's bridal gown work of Givenchy's Clare Waight Keller

May 22, 2018

LONDON — Clare Waight Keller of Givenchy is the master British designer behind the sleek silk boat-necked gown and long billowing veil worn by Meghan Markle as she walked down the nave of St. George's Chapel for her wedding to Prince Harry. The clean lines of the white dress highlighted Markle's smiling face Saturday as she sat at the altar of the chapel, holding Harry's hand as the sprawling train lay at her feet. "It's brave to not have decorations and embellishments. What a strong fashion statement. It's modern and classic at the same time," Phillipa Lepley, a leading London...

The Latest: Zuckerberg to heading to EU next Tuesday

May 22, 2018

LONDON — The Latest on Facebook's privacy scandal (all times local): 1:40 p.m. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will meet with leaders of the European parliament in a closed-door meeting next Tuesday about the data protection scandal that has engulfed his company. Even though his visit had been announced, it was left unclear exactly when Zuckerberg would visit the European Union legislature. The EU and British parliaments have been calling for Zuckerberg to appear before them for weeks ever since it emerged that a company, political consultants Cambridge Analytica, had been allowed to misuse the data of millions of Facebook users....
